Power Outage Tips

When the power goes out, the last thing you want is to become disconnected from the world around you. However, checking your landline or charging your cell phone may not be your top priority if you're busy gathering necessary supplies during a power outage.

Before you find yourself stuck in a dark house with only flashlights to guide you, make sure you have the communication devices you need when faced with an unfortunate blackout. Follow these simple steps before a long-term power outage occurs to ensure you'll still be able to communicate as needed.

How to prepare for a power outage:

* Invest in a generator. A home generator provides an immediate energy supply during a power outage. Many start automatically and continuously fuel your home with electricity, enabling you to charge your cell phone until the power returns. Make sure to have it professionally set up to guarantee the proper installation.

* Switch your home phone to a landline. While devices like digital phones (also known as VOIP phones) need electricity and an Internet connection to operate, landlines do not. When a blackout occurs, traditional landlines with corded phones will continue to work, leaving you connected in case of an emergency.

* Find alternative ways to charge your cell. Consider battery-operated cell phone chargers to power your phone. You may also want to consider keeping an extra cell phone battery on hand in cases of power outages. Being proactive can make a big difference during a blackout.

* Buy an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for your computer. Although this is not the cheapest or easiest alternative, an uninterrupted power supply (UPS) for your home computer network can be useful during a power outage. A UPS can power your phone charger until the electricity returns. While not an ideal long-term solution, UPS is a great way to give your cell phone the quick charge it needs to get you through a day or two.

What to do when the power goes out: Once a power outage occurs, get the help you need and stay connected to those closest to you while dealing with a blackout situation. Take these steps before your cell phone battery completely dies.

* Call the power company. Having the power company's phone number programmed into your phone saves you time during an emergency. When your power goes out, call them as soon as possible to let them know of the situation.

* Alert your family members. Whether you text message a few main contacts or make a quick phone call before your phone dies, it's important to update a few people with your status and whereabouts in case of an emergency.

* Drive to a safe place. If the power goes out because of severe thunderstorms or lightning, assess your situation and decide whether you should remain in your current location or drive to a safe place. If you decide to leave, take the necessary supplies you need to stay connected while away from home.

Power outages have the potential to disconnect you from the world, but they don't have to. All it takes is a little preparation and you can continue to communicate with minimal interruption. Lastly, storms, lightning and other unfortunate events can cause damage to your home. Make sure you and your house are protected, and ensure the home safety your family deserves with home insurance coverage. Contact Nationwide Insurance for more information.
